"Lately, when it comes to Thai food in New York, the spotlight has been on the spice-fueled cuisine of the Isan region, in the northeast. But the restaurateur Kittigron Lertpanaruk, also known as Khun Oh, is from the south, where curries dominate, and he feels it’s time to give that part of Thailand its due..."
Set in a former warehouse in the heart of Williamsburg, NORA Thai has been converted into a tropical Thai paradise serving up some of some of the most authentic southern-Thai inspired soul food in town. With an extensive curry menu to choose from, for a taste of something truly unique the Gaeng Kua (black pepper curry with pork belly) and Pad Sator (Thai chili and bean dish) come highly recommended.
Pad sator goong, aka, salted sator bean dish, also graces the Nora Thai menu. Here, sator beans—also called stink beans or parkia speciosa, as they’re referred to in Thailand—are sautéed with Thai chiles, garlic, bell peppers, oyster sauce and ground pork. Though the Nora Thai team sources the beans from local specialty Asian markets in Chinatown, lima beans make a fine substitute.
We love Thai takeout as much as the next New Yorker, but Nora Thai is expanding our notion beyond overly sweet pad Thai and coconut-milk-laced curries. Owner Khun Oh, who brought chains like Spice and Sea to the city, is introducing diners to the comforts of southern and royal Thai food: black-pepper curry and steamed purple dumplings are a few of the dishes but also look for modern takes on favorites such as the zucchini pad Thai.

"One of the newest is Nora Thai, whose distinction is in its divergence from the entrenched Northern Thai menus elsewhere by offering the food of Southern Thailand, from which owner Kittigron Lirtpanaruk (better known as Khun Oh) emigrated to live out his American Dream."
